We see them all over the world, kids standing on the roadside selling what ever they have; fruits, vegetables, newspapers and flowers. These are mobile stands which are unregistered trade. It’s easy, quick and cheap.
One is so used to seeing these roadside vendors that we tend to forget that they are illegal and often constitute a traffic hazard. We rarely give any thought to the people behind the road stands.
HOLIDAY FLOWERS is the story of a couple, who runs a small chain of roadside stands. After going bankrupt they decide to try a new trade: selling flowers and strawberries at roadside, in order to try and make a living.
Motti is a 51 years old, pure bred Yemenite, a man of honor. In the past he spent time in jail. Gila is 39-year-old fiery redhead. She's divorced with two kids, neurotic, filled with sarcasm, workaholic and toothless. This is not a metaphor, it is a fact. If they will make a lot of money this Passover holiday, (Passover is considered the hot season in the flower trade), she can perhaps afford to have her teeth fixed. Gila and Motti are not married but have been together for 12 years and manage six roadside stands in a major junction, in central Israel.
It’s not easy to survive in this line of business. There are daily clashes with the police, municipal authorities and the local Mob who demand protection money.
All this becomes crazier on the Passover weekend. Selling 5000 flower bouquets within 48 hours at 6 roadside stands.
The film is also about the children selling at the stands, and about us who stop at the roadside to make a last minute purchase of flowers for the holiday. It’s funny as it is emotionally touching. In a way it’s absurd, and in other it is so familiar and realistic.
“I wanted to do a film about Israel. Of how we really look like in day to day life. Our local films are always about the big issues, “wars, politics, minorities, discriminations”. This film is about two individuals who don’t deal with these matters. They are too busy minding their own business trying to make a living”.
